Chelyabinsk is an industrial city in the Ural region of Russia, known for its factories and metallurgy. But on February 15, 2013, it became known to the world for a different reason: a meteor exploded above the city.
The composition is built around silhouettes of city landmarks against that flash. It reads as a light that momentarily united the city and the sky. The rusty iron texture references Chelyabinsk’s industrial identity: factories, metal, a working character. The graphic style of the poster evokes Soviet-era mosaics and frescoes that were placed on building facades and inside them. The poster connects the cosmic and the earthly: an event on a planetary scale and the everyday life of an industrial city.
