Gorgan is the capital of Golestan province in northern Iran. Its oldest recorded name is «Varkana» a name appearing in the Behistun Inscription that signifies » Land of Wolves». The modern name «Gorgan» derives from the middle Persian «Gurgan» a root that ultimately traces back to the word for Wolf.
